Pet Grooming Comb | Beastie Co | Professional Work

I partnered with Lizzy Skelding, founder and chemist of Beastie, to design a beautiful comb that functions as a daily use fur brush for cats and dogs, and doubles as an object of art.

Project Timeline : 1 month

Setting the Scene

Meet Lizzy

This is Lizzy Skelding. Chemist, Entrepreneur and Founder of Beastie.

She has a vision to disrupt the pet care industry with natural and healthier alternatives to dog and cat shampoo.

"

Vets and groomers generally say that the best way to take care of fur is daily brushing paired with occasional or as-needed baths. Searching for a pet brush, you'll find some pretty scary options.

Insights

Pet specific combs with metal teeth are more effective for untangling fur and aggressive grooming, but regular combs with plastic teeth are great for everyday use.

Combing through all the fur takes around 10 minutes, and it's difficult to find options that remain both comfortable and grippy when wet.

Market Landscape

Lizzy was searching for a comb that resonated with her existing mission and visual identity. The existing options that we found together were somewhat functional, but aesthetically aggressive and not right for her brand.

Lizzy's Problem

While Lizzy has created a meaningful mission and a strong visual identity for her shampoo brand, she’s still searching for a comb that works well and reflects the same values she brings to her audience.

The Direction

Establishing the Visual Direction

Lizzy’s existing visuals for her brand feel luxurious and natural - connecting to the high quality experiences and functionality of her shampoo products. Together, we came up with some common themes of liquid gold, trees and luxuriously artistic.

Mood Board

I created a mood board inspired by Lizzy’s existing brand visuals. The linear patterns, scalloped and hammered textures connect to her natural and high quality visual elements. The colors and textures here translate her vision into the physical design direction.

The Constraints

Must be a unique design.

An "object of art".

Must be able to stand up on it's own for presentation.

Must be comfortable to hold when wet.

Must incorporate Lizzy's logo and brand identity.

The Ideation

The Solution

"

... the most interesting textural grip. It’s the vibe I was looking for but couldn’t visualize it.
